The Backstory
This is not an autobiography, so (fortunately for you), I won’t start at the very beginning. I’ll skip the first 35 years or so. This whole ‘audio thing’ started not too long after I came to know Jesus as my Lord and Savior, so He gets the credit for anything good that happens after that point.
Attending (Calvary Christian Church f/k/a Calvary Temple Assembly of God) with my wife and young children back in the early 1990’s, and, looking to serve the Lord, I joined the worship team. Initially, as a back-up vocalist, then playing bass guitar, which I put away over a decade earlier. Then, it just kept getting better and better…
So, at some point in the late 1990’s, my worship leader at the time (David Stapp, this is all your doing ☺), semi-volunteered me to head up the ‘sound team’, as there was a vacancy that needed to be filled. I guess I was the only candidate with sufficient “geek” to fill the slot.
Since “Calvary” (by either name) was growing exponentially during this time, they became a go-to source for ‘answers’ that several smaller (and not so small) local (and nor so local) churches had. To be clear- I’m talking about technology here, not theology! The ‘we have a feedback problem’, ‘my wireless mics sound hollow’, ‘who do you use for ___’, ‘we can’t afford (contractor X)’, ‘do you know anybody that can ___’. At some point, Calvary’s staff trusted me enough to provide some answers (or direction, at the least). God opened a door, and so was born the concept of Upright.
